Making a Splash at El Roble

Seventh and eighth graders at El Roble Intermediate School traded the blacktop for the pool last week as aquatics PE got underway. Since Friday, August 28, students have been spending their PE period in the water, racing each other across the lanes, playing volleyball, and splashing in the late summer sun. Aquatics runs through the end of October, and the pool will reopen for student use in the spring.

Time in the pool gives students something a classroom cannot: a chance to build water safety skills, stretch their endurance, and cheer each other on in a whole new setting. Safety comes first every session, with PE teachers on deck and a lifeguard on duty any time students are in the water. Nice work, Panthers, and keep having fun out there.

All 10 CUSD Schools Earn Platinum PBIS Recognition

Every campus in Claremont Unified has something to celebrate. All 10 CUSD schools have been named 2025-2026 Platinum Recognized Schools by California PBIS, the highest level in the state's recognition system for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. Chaparral, Condit, Mountain View, Oakmont Outdoor, Sumner Danbury, Sycamore, and Vista del Valle elementary schools earned Platinum alongside El Roble Intermediate School, Claremont High School, and San Antonio High School. California PBIS honored nearly 2,700 award recipients statewide this year across its Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum levels, and CUSD is proud that every one of its schools reached the top tier.

The state recognition system, launched in 2015, acknowledges schools that implement whole-child aligned PBIS with fidelity to the national framework. In practice, that means teaching behavior expectations as deliberately as academic content, celebrating students when they meet them, and using schoolwide data to make sure every student gets the support they need. PBIS is named in The CUSD Commitment as a districtwide initiative under Focus Area 1.0, and it directly advances Focus Area 4.0, Student and Staff Safety and Wellness, by building campus cultures where students feel known, respected, and ready to learn. A districtwide sweep at the Platinum level reflects years of steady, coordinated work by site teams, teachers, support staff, and administrators at all 10 schools. Congratulations to everyone who made it happen.

Student Board Members Sworn In for the 2026-2027 School Year

The CUSD Board of Education welcomed two new voices to the dais last night as student board members Leia Sandoval and Corinne Sorel were sworn into office with their families watching from the audience. Board President Dr. Alex McDonald stepped to the podium to administer the oath, and one after the other, the students took their seats at the dais and cast their first votes of the school year. Leia will represent San Antonio High School and Corinne will represent Claremont High School.

As student board members, Leia and Corinne carry the student perspective into every conversation the Board has, and their voices will help shape decisions made on behalf of CUSD students all year long. Throughout the year, they work with principals at every CUSD site to gather updates and report out on what is happening across the district, while also sharing news from their own campuses. Their first report to the Board comes at the next meeting. Look for a closer look at both students in the next edition of CUSD Celebrates!

Condit Elementary Earns Apple Distinguished School Recognition Again

Condit Elementary School has once again been named an Apple Distinguished School. The designation recognizes schools that demonstrate a strong commitment to innovation, creativity, and the meaningful integration of technology to enhance teaching and learning. Earning it once is a significant achievement. Earning it again speaks to the consistency and care behind the work happening in Condit classrooms every day.

Congratulations to former Principal Geoff Smith, current Interim Principal Dr. Brett O'Connor, and the entire Condit staff for their continued leadership and dedication to creating engaging and innovative learning experiences for every student. The district looks forward to recognizing Condit at a Board meeting this fall.

Women in Leadership Returns Monday, October 5

Mark your calendar. On Monday, October 5, the Don F. Fruechte Theatre for the Performing Arts fill with pink for the Fourth Annual Empowering CUSD Students: Women in Leadership Panel. This is the night our student ambassadors take the stage, research every guest, write every question, and lead the entire conversation themselves. This year's panelists will be revealed next week, and the lineup is one of our strongest yet. The evening is held in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so plan to wear pink.
