New Superintendent to Lead Claremont Unified School District into the Future

Dr. Jeff WilsonApril 27, 2021 - The Claremont Unified School District Board of Trustees is poised to name long-time educator, Dr. Jeffrey Wilson, as the new Superintendent of Schools contingent upon final Board approval at their regular meeting on May 6, 2021. Dr. Wilson’s career spans twenty-eight years as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent. He currently serves as Superintendent of Schools in San Marino Unified School District. Before assuming the role of Superintendent, Dr. Wilson led the Educational Services Department in Arcadia Unified School District as Assistant Superintendent for five years.

Dr. Wilson’s journey in public education began in the Covina Valley Unified School District where he taught middle school students. He soon moved on to site administrator assignments as an assistant principal and principal at the secondary level.  In 2008, Dr. Wilson accepted a principal position at First Avenue Middle School in Arcadia USD, where he served for six years before promoting to the position of Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services.

Born and raised in Glendora, California, Jeff is a graduate of Glendora High School.  He has been married to Corrine, a devoted 4th-grade teacher in the El Monte City School District, for 33 years.  They continue to make their home in Glendora where they raised their daughter Ally, a Registered Nurse in the Burn ICU at Torrance Memorial Hospital.  Prior to completing his Ed.D. at Azusa Pacific University, Dr. Wilson earned his BS degree in Accounting from CSU Fullerton, a Master’s of Divinity from Talbot Seminary, and an MS from CSUF in Educational Leadership.

Dr. Wilson’s passion for connecting students to school was the impetus for his research on the relationship of extracurricular and co-curricular involvement with academic success.  As a lifelong learner, Dr. Wilson is committed to continuing to apply his research to strengthen programs, processes, and activities that develop meaningful connections for students who need them the most, believing that it is through education that lives are transformed.

“As we thoughtfully searched for our next superintendent, Dr. Wilson’s humility, commitment, and focus on bringing all voices to the table made it clear to the Board that he is the right person for the job,” noted Board President Nancy Treser Osgood. “Finding an experienced superintendent with a proven track record of success in implementing programs that promote racial equity and social justice was a fit for Claremont USD, where that attribute was identified as highly desirable by stakeholders during our extensive community outreach. We are confident that Dr. Wilson’s spirit of collaboration will lead CUSD through these unprecedented times and beyond.”

The Board extends its appreciation to Dr. Wilson and the other highly qualified applicants who showed an interest in the position. Trustees also want to express their gratitude to CUSD employees, parents, community members, as well as the ESS search advisers, for their valuable involvement throughout this process.

Looking ahead to his July 1st start date, Dr. Wilson shared, “I want to thank the Board of Education in Claremont for their confidence in considering me as Claremont’s next Superintendent of Schools. I look forward with great anticipation to immersing myself in the community, meeting and learning from the cabinet, management team, classified and certificated employees, bargaining unit leadership, students, and parent leaders - all of the people who make CUSD the premier school district that it is.”

The Claremont Unified School District’s Search for a New Superintendent of Schools is Underway

With the Governing Board expected to make a selection by May 6, 2021.

Claremont, March 2, 2021:  The Claremont Unified School District initiated the search for a new superintendent of schools soon after it was announced that former Superintendent Dr. Jim Elsasser had accepted an offer to become superintendent of the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District in Orange County.  During the search process, Interim Superintendent Dr. Julie Olesniewicz, who has served as the District’s Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, has been appointed to lead CUSD.

The District has secured the support of advisers Gary Rutherford, Joe Condon, and Beverly Hempstead from Education Support Services (ESS), a consulting firm that assists school districts with superintendent searches, governance training, human resources, and more.

“The Governing Board’s decision to retain Education Support Services to advise and engage in the search for our District’s next superintendent shows a commitment to finding the best candidate for the position through an open and transparent process, while also protecting the confidentiality of our high-quality applicants,” according to CUSD Board President Nancy Treser Osgood.  Applications for the position are due by March 31.

“In March, we will spend time conducting focus groups with a variety of stakeholders, including principals, parents, employee association representatives, civic/community leaders, and district office staff,” according to ESS search adviser Gary Rutherford.

Rutherford added, “All employees and members of the community are also invited to complete an online survey designed to collect stakeholder’s views regarding the opportunities and challenges facing the district, as well as determine qualities and characteristics essential for success for the incoming superintendent.”  A link to complete the survey can be found on this page. The survey is scheduled to close on March 15 at 5:00 p.m.

The trends and findings from the interviews and online survey will be presented to the board on March 18 at the regular board meeting.  The information will be used in the development of a Leadership Profile that will guide the recruitment, screening, interview, and selection process.

After all the applications are submitted, the ESS consultants will do a full vetting and analysis of each candidate, which is expected to take a few weeks.  A list of applicants who most closely match the Leadership Profile will be presented to the board, who will then decide which applicants to interview in an extensive confidential interview process.

The new superintendent’s contract is expected to be on the agenda of the board meeting on May 6, with an anticipated starting date of July 1, 2021.
