The art for these notecards are snipets of a mural that was created by the more than 320 kindergarten through sixth grade students of Vista del Valle Elementary School during the 1997-1998 school year under the direction and guidance of Vista del Valle's artists-in-residence, Merrilyn O'Neill and Aliza Boyer.
The mural measures more than 50 feet in length and is 13 feet tall. It was inspired by our school-wide interest in native Southwestern flora and fauna. The mural is on the east-facing wall overlooking a native plant area in our kindergarten yard. The plantings there, with assistance from Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden and Cal Poly Pomona's horticulture club, Los Robles, were selected for texture, color, and aroma. Ms. O'Neill's assistance was funded by a generous grant from ED NET, the local Claremont educational foundation. Additional financial support for this project came from the Claremont Unified School District and the Vista del Valle Parent Faculty Association.
Proceeds from the sale of notecards go directly to support further school-wide science and art efforts that teach understanding of and respect for our precious natural environment.
