The Numbers

This concrete structure depicting the first ten digits had been a part of Vista's landscape for many years. It had always been a single, neutral color. The sixth-grade graduating class of 1996 applid their studies of optics, light refraction, and color theory to a "retro" style painting of the numbers as a farewell gsture to their school.

Students were given the three ormary colors - red, blue, and yellow - and from these created a spectrum of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Through their study of the color wheel, students knew which colors are complementary or contrasting and which are harmonious, chosing accordingly to depict their own area of design and signature.

Seen through a red fiter, the only the "cool" colors (blue, greens, and purples) are seen, whereas reds and oranges aren't absorbed, so can't be seen. Some students chose to "hide" their signatures and designs with their use of color. When viewed through a red filter, they magicaly appear. Unlike the 2 larger cooperative murals at Vista, each student was given their own space on which to work. They did, however, show thoughtfulness in designing their portion, knowing that their small section was a part of the larger whole.
