Kids#1 Kids#2 Kids#3

The Public Art Series is one of the Claremont Unified School District's newest efforts to beautify our schools while enriching the educational experience of our students. The students of Claremont Unified's seven elementary schools will be invited, as a part of their curriculum for the 1997-98 school year, to work with community artist and teacher Merrilyn O'Neill to create a mural at each school showcasing the talent and creativity of Claremont's youngest citizens.
This project is being funded through a generous grant from the Education Network Foundation ( EdNet ).

The following murals have been completed and are currently viewable. Quotes from child artists are included with the images, as well as a full description of the mural itself.

The following murals are currently in-progress or are still in the planning phase. Initial sketches, student analysis, and in-progress photographs, and project descriptions are currently available.

This depicts a small portion of the first mural painted at Vista, in 1994. Covering a 14'x63' wall, it was a cooperative piece involving each student at the school. studies in science, art, and math came together during this 2-month project.

Vista Elemetary: The Rainforest

"I liked doing this mural because Mrs. O'Neill let us paint whatever we wanted. We got to do our art however we liked it."

VIS#2
This shows a small portion of a wrap-around mural that covers five entire walls at Vista. It is in the impressionist style, and depicts parts of Claude Monet's garden at Giverny. It also borders Vista's own Student Garden.

Vista Elementary: Monet's Garden

"I liked painting the pretty flowers and stuff. It was fun to learn about plants and flowers in science class and then go and paint them."

VIS#3
The 6th grade class of 1996 took this existing, unpainted concrete structure and applied their knowoledge of color theory, optics, and light refraction to create a "retro" sitting spot for their fellow students.

Vista Elemetary: The Numbers

"The numbers used to be so boring when they were just one color, but now they are so lively! And it was so fun getting to personalize it like that...I even put my name on it!"
