Procedures for Modification of School Program and Work Assignments:
 

ACTION
 

RESPONSIBILITY

A.

Predicated Stage I Smog Episode
 

1.

Notification that a Smog Episode is predicated or has been attained shall be transmitted to the offices of:
 

Superintendent

a.

The principal of each school

b.

The Assistant Superintendent of Business

c.

The Director of Maintenance and Operations

d.

The City of Claremont
 

2.

If notification of a predicated Stage I Smog Episode for the following day is received before the end of the school day and/or staff working day, all students and staff members present will be advised of the predicted Smog Episode. Their cooperation will be requested for reduced vehicular use and carpools on the following day.

When a Smog Episode is predicted:
 

a.

All elementary school physical education classes requiring prolonged or strenuous physical activities shall be planned to be held prior to noon on the day for which an episode is predicted.

b.

Strenuous physical activities shall not be planned for secondary school physical education classes scheduled after noon on the day for which an episode is predicted.

c.

Practice sessions requiring prolonged or strenuous physical activities (athletic teams, band, drill teams, etc.) shall be planned to be held prior to the beginning of the school day (prior to noon on a non-school day) or after sunset on the day for which an episode is predicted.

d.

"Home" athletic events scheduled between noon and sunset on the day for which a Smog Episode is predicted shall be postponed, cancelled or relocated.

4.

On the day for which a Smog Episode is predicted the yellow smog flag shall be displayed prominently during business hours until:

a.

The end of the day, or

b.

A smog episode is attained, or

c.

The prediction is withdrawn
 

B.

Predicted Stage II Smog Episode
 

1.

If notification of a predicted Stage II Smog Episode for the following day is received before the end of the school day and/or working day, students and staff members will be notified for the day of the predicted State II Smog Episode.

C.

Predicted Stage III Smog Episode
 

1.

If notification of a predicted Stage III Smog Episode is received for the following day:
 

Superintendent

a.

A minimum day will be declared for the school day for which the episode is predicted with classes ending by 12:20 p.m.

b.

Schools/Departments will be directed to reduce energy consumption by 40%; and

c.

Principals/Supervisors will be directed to implement Traffic Abatement Plan used for Stage II.
 

D.

Attained Stage I Smog Episode
 

1.

Upon receipt of notification that a Stage I, II, or III Smog Episode has been attained all students and staff members present will be notified, and the red smog flag shall be prominently displayed until sunset or until the Smog Episode has ended, whichever occurs first.

Regular School Activities - During a Stage I Smog Episode strenuous physical activities for all students shall be discontinued. Activities of a less strenuous nature should be substituted. All elementary students and, when practical, secondary students shall be allowed to remain indoors. Children having respiratory difficulties aggravated by smog and who have notes from parents or doctors must be allowed to remain indoors.
 

3.

Athletic Events - A "home" athletic event shall be postponed, cancelled, or relocated if a Stage I Smog Episode which was not predicted has been attained for the game site area one hour before the event is scheduled to begin.

Practice Sessions (athletic teams, band, drill team, etc.) - Any of these sessions being conducted during an attained Stage I shall conform with the provisions of this section.

5.

Maintenance and Operations Department Activities - Any staff working outdoors shall be limited to those jobs which do not require prolonged or strenuous activity. District vehicular activities shall be limited to emergency repair responses.
 

E.

Attained Stage II Smog Episode
 

1.

Regular School Activities - Strenuous physical activities by all students shall be discontinued. All elementary and secondary students shall be required to remain inside.

2.

Co-Curricular and Extra-Curricular Activities Shall Be Cancelled.

3.

Maintenance and Operations Department - All employees working on the outside facilities shall be required to return to the Maintenance and Operations facility. Employees shall then remain inside except those required for emergency response.
 

Director of Maintenance and Operations

a.

All school facilities and playgrounds used by the Claremont Parks and Recreation Department and other outside groups shall be closed.

F.

Attained Stage III Smog Episode
 

1.

The Claremont Unified School District and all District operations will be subject to the Civil Defense and Disaster policies and procedures of the City of Claremont and the State of California.
