Regional Assembly Meeting

January 10, 2003

The Region XV Regional Assembly was held January 8, 2003 in Arcadia. More than fifty administrators and confidential employees met to review and discuss several key topics. Led by President, Alice Petrossian, the meeting featured a presentation by State ACSA Member Services and Professional Standards Assistant Director, Joe Jones. Reiterating this year's theme, United We Stand, Mr. Jones congratulated our region for its continued growth in recruitment of new ACSA members in spite of the dower economic climate. Our membership is nearly 16,000 members as a result of your proactive recruitment efforts. He also reminded the audience of the six Professional Standards Advocates that support ASCA members through discussions with our legislators and other political lobbyist.

Sharon Millen and Mike Seaton presented a brief report on the work of the Governance Task Force. One of the primary objectives of the task force is to examine the structure of ACSA to determine what's working and what's not? It was noted that our current structure is "not broken," but we are always exploring ways to improve services for members. Your help will be needed to gather this information. An Appreciation Inquiry will be used to survey members about how ACSA has benefited you and your district. A brief half hour telephone interview will be used to elicit this information. You may be call! The inquiry results will be used to develop a vision statement for ACSA.

President Alice Petrossian distributed a handout detailing ACSA's position statements from the No Child Left Behind Task Force. Attendees reviewed the document and asked questions related to the various positions and were encouraged to contact their local and state legislators to support these positions.

Charter Presidents and Committee Chairs participated in breakout sessions. The Charter presidents reviewed charter bylaws and newsletters. Committee chairs discussed activities within their specific areas.

Olivia Cervantes and Joe Jones announced that the Alhambra charter had the highest new member enrollment last month. Congratulations to the Alhambra team!

Ron Leon reported that the Superintendents Committee continues to meet and support ACSA activities. The primary focus of the group is to increase involvement in the committee and to create a forum for superintendent's media and governmental issues.

Overall, the Regional Assembly provided attendees with the opportunity to hear the latest information regarding education and the local, state, and federal levels. Members also spent time socializing and networking with each other. The meeting was informative for the participants and the ACSA board.
