Achievement Snapshot #1
Junior, fifth grader, represents a group of second language students who are steadily moving up from the first quartile in grade two to the second quartile and above in grade three, four and five in reading, math and language. Junior came to Vista del Valle as a second grader from Mexico, speaking no English at all. Last year, more than 28% of the Vista del Valle school population were second language learners of English. Junior has participated in the two day per week after school tutoring program at the Vista del Valle Townhomes for the last two years. In addition to his test scores and classroom participation, Junior has also seen his English as a Second Language status advance from Beginning to Early Advanced in less than four years.
Achievement Snapshot #2
Mercedes, a sixth grader, represents a group of lower Social Economic Status students who have made significant progress in reading, spelling and math. On the Stanford-9 assessment, she has improved by more than a decile in each area each year for the last three years. Of her lower Social Economic Status peers, 27% have made similar progress. Mercedes also met end of the year fifth grade benchmarks on our RESULTS assessments in 80% of the categories. Of her peers, 45% did the same or better. Mercedes has also participated two afternoons a week for the last two years in our on-campus Homework Club (alongside 32 other students). In addition, Mercedes has taken part in our after-school instrumental music program for the last two years (along with 22 others). During that time, she has participated in four community recitals and two special assemblies at Vista del Valle. Is there any doubt about the usefulness and importance of just a few, quality after-school programs?
