Mountain View Elementary School

Achievement Snapshot #1
L
ara is a fifth grader at Mountain View from a predominately Spanish speaking family. She is representative of the thirty-three percent Hispanic population and the ninety-seven English Learner students at our school. Lara has been a Mountain View student since Kindergarten. Due to her low English skills she has been very quiet and withdrawn. Mathematics skills and problem solving procedures had also lagged behind. With continued assistance from Title I instructional assistants, the English Language Development aide, the satellite tutoring program at the Claremont Village Apartments, and extra teacher time, Lara improved dramatically. As demonstrated by her Stanford-9 growth, she had an incredible academic year. In total reading, her score rose 33 points from the 15%ile to 55%ile, while in total mathematics she improved 31 points from the 19%ile to the 50%ile. Although her increases are not indicative of all Hispanic students, Mountain View’s Hispanic subgroup (as broken down by Academic Index Performance scores) has met its growth target for 2001 and 2002, with the 2001 score far exceeding the expectation by 86 points.end

Achievement Snapshot #2
A
s a third grade student, Sasha was working below grade level. Her Stanford-9 scores ranked in the lower quintiles; total reading at the 38%ile and Mathematics at the 22%ile. Although her scores were low in total reading and total mathematics, she was eager to learn and enjoyed school. Sasha is representative of our Title I population consisting of 141 students. Since second grade, with the support of Title I instructional assistants, Reading Across America tutors, after school tutoring, teacher interventions and hard work, Sasha has considerably raised her Stanford-9 scores. Her Stanford-9 2002 scores rose 33 points to the 71%ile in Reading and increased 71 points to the 93%ile in Mathematics. Her growth is also demonstrated in her 5th grade end of the year Progress Report. In the areas of Reading, Writing, and Language Conventions she received “At Standard” rubric scores in all categories. In Mathematics she received “At Standard” rubric scores in Number Sense, Measurement & Geometry, Statistics, Mathematical Reasoning and Algebra & Functions. Throughout her years at Mountain View, Sasha continues her positive attitude toward school and learning. end
